Volunteer Salute: Chris Plecash

This summer, the Mainstreeter’s prolific City Hall reporter, Chris Plecash, left the Mainstreeter to pursue a full-time career with the major weekly newspaper, The Hill Times.

Chris joined the Mainstreeter last fall while he was a student in the Documentary Production program at Algonquin College. Originally from Wawa on the Eastern shore of Lake Superior, Chris moved to Ottawa from Toronto in the fall of 2010 after completing his M.A. in philosophy at York University.

During his busy year at the Mainstreeter, Chris broke the story of the City ‘s purchase of the vacant lot next to the Old Town Hall and covered the impact of the new City budget on Old Ottawa East.

Chris was an active part of the Mainstreeter’s move to build a strong on-line presence. He organized a three-camera film team to film last November’s November 11th commemoration ceremony at the Brantwood Gates, and is currently finishing off a video about Old Ottawa East’s community police officer, Constable Khoa Hoang. Both videos will appear soon on the Mainstreeter’s new website. Members of the Strathcona Legion gave Chris a long ovation after getting a sneak preview of the short film on last November’s ceremony.

“Volunteering was a great opportunity for me to develop my journalistic portfolio, but to also get to know a great community within Ottawa that I may not have come to know otherwise”, says Chris. “During the few months I was a volunteer with The Mainstreeter I had the opportunity to meet some great people. I’d like to thank The Mainstreeter for the chance to contribute to an important source of information for Old Ottawa East’s residents, and the Strathcona Legion for welcoming me and sharing their stories last Remembrance Day”.

After a short internship at The Hill Times this spring, Chris was offered a permanent position at the highly regarded weekly paper. We thank Chris for his incredible dedication to the Mainstreeter over the last year and wish him the very best success as a full-time scribe!
