Volunteer Salute: Heather Dyke – News Reporter

This summer, the Mainstreeter newsroom was saddened to learn that we would lose one of our experienced news reporters.

After graduating from Carleton University’s journalismprogram in the spring, Heather Dyke decided to leave her Mainstreeter beat to focus her attention on studies in Algonquin College’s technical writing program.

With her full-time journalistic experience, Dyke was a valuable anchor in our newsroom of beginners and veterans. Her talent allowed us to expand and improve our news coverage.

One of the challenges in running a volunteer-based community newspaper is managing the constant turnover of volunteers, so it was an unexpected pleasure when Dyke walked in as a potential volunteer with a portfolio of published news articles under her arm.

Originally from Port Williams in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, Dyke moved to Ottawa in 2009 to attend Carleton and moved to Old Ottawa East to be with her partner, J.P. Landry. She arrived on the Mainstreeter’s doorstep with a summer’s worth of experience working as a full-time reporter-photographer for the Kings County Advertiser/Register,a weekly newspaper with a circulation of over 3,000 in Kentville, N.S.

Dyke’s reporting passion was sports and she quickly beefed up the Mainstreeter’s coverage of summer leagues in Springhurst Park, the Oblate Lands as well as intercollegiate sports at Immaculata High School. As a roving repoter she ably covered city issues, election campaigns, and public meetings.

“Volunteering for the Mainstreeter was a wonderful way for me to become a part of the Old Ottawa East community,” Dyke said. “I met many great people and enjoyed hearing their stories.”
We join with our readers in thanking Heather for her time and considerable talent to our community paper and wish her every success in her next adventure.
