Renovations are still underway at the Rideau East Apartments at 170 Lees Ave. after a fire in April damaged the building.

The renovations, begun in 2009, were planned as a five-year project and are currently expected to be finished by the winter of 2013.

“It doesn’t affect me much,” claimed one resident who did not wish to be identified, when asked how the long period of construction at the building was affecting living conditions. “My apartment’s finished, so it’s just construction going on in other parts of the building. You see [construction] outside, but it’s not really in the way for me.”

More than half of the projected timeline for the renovations has passed. Rhonda Billings, the building manager, could not say what percent of apartments had been renovated to date. Those apartments  however, were occupied or available for occupancy, she said.

The April 14 fire was the most notable setback to the renovation schedule. It started in the bedroom of one apartment and was reported to have caused $200,000 damage to the building as well as $35,000 damage to the apartment’s contents. Fortunately,  no one was seriously injured.

“We’re currently at a standstill,” Billings said, earlier this summer. “We’re going into a new phase, [there are] 60 units being transferred.”

The project remained on schedule despite the damages caused by the fire, and was projected to finish inside the five-year projection.
