City improves Brantwood Park rink

In response to a long-standing community request, the city has begun improvements at the Brantwood Park rink that will save huge quantities of water and considerable time for volunteer hosers.

In November, the city added about 150 cubic metres of soil to the field where the rink is arduously established each winter. Crews graded the new soil to eliminate large depressions.

In the past, the creation of base ice has frustrated volunteers because of the time required to fill areas in the field where the level of the soil dips. The uneven surface resulted in thin portions of ice readily susceptible to melting when the sun strengthened in late January and February.

Next spring, the city will resurvey the field after the new material has settled. It will add more soil and grass seed.

The project is expected to cost $9,500.

City staff have asked residents to stay off the site until the ground is completely frozen so that grading work isn’t disturbed.

Old Ottawa East’s rink is one of the busiest in the city. The absence of boards allows for recreational hockey and skating for all skill levels.

Organizers are always looking for volunteer hosers who flood the rink every night. Rink coordinator Cindy Courtemanche says on average a volunteer spends about four or five evenings during the winter to help flood the ice.

Volunteers work in pairs.

Local teenagers with first aid training and the ability to support a safe and welcoming environment find work providing rink supervision. Mike Galazka Service Centre of Main Street plows the rink after heavy snowfalls.
