Main Farmers’ Market is moving

The Main Farmers’ Market, located in the parking lot of Saint Paul University since 2007, is moving to Immaculata High School.

The board of the popular Old Ottawa East attraction has signalled the 2013 season will begin May 4. Many favourite vendors are returning along with new organic vegetable producers, new prepared food vendors and crafts vendors.

The market will see an increase in entertainment and events each Saturday–more music, chef demonstrations, and children’s activities.

The market board wanted to establish a new home before the beginning of Main Street reconstruction next year.

The board believes 2014-2015 will be a very difficult time for the market as Main Street is redeveloped. It spent a great deal of time considering its response to ensure the market’s survival of what is expected to be a major disruption.

It determined customers would be reluctant to come to the market if they faced construction barriers and Local Traffic Only signs.

By moving now, the board is hoping customers will be accustomed to the new location before any construction turmoil in 2014-15.

Immaculata is only one block north of Saint Paul, with access from Echo Drive as well as Main Street.

The school is enthusiastic about forming a partnership. Some advantages for the market include free customer parking, room to expand, a supply of students looking to volunteer and the chance for the market to participate in Immaculata’s  food bank.
