Construction Newsletter No. 3 – June 19, 2015

While the construction season settles into different areas of Ottawa, the Main Street project continues to be focused between Clegg Street and Echo Drive. As the schools in the community are wrapping for the summer, please watch out for children playing when driving in the area.

On-Going

Here’s what we are currently working on:

  • Installation of a caisson (access pit) just north of Greenfield Drive and a shaft (exit pit) just south of Lees Avenue. The caisson and the shaft will be utilized for the tunneling of a 1.2m (~4ft) diameter storm sewer. The storm sewer tunneling equipment will be installed in the caisson north of Greenfield Avenue and the tunnel will end in the shaft south of Lees Avenue;
  • Construction of the retaining wall at Immaculata High School;
  • Excavation for the Public Art foundation in front of St. Paul University;
  • Installation of the watermain from Clegg Street heading to Springhurst Avenue.

Up-Coming

Here are the key new upcoming construction activities over the next two weeks:

  • Installation of the tunneling equipment in the caisson and tunneling preparatory work;

  • Storm sewer installation from Springhurst Avenue northerly to Lees Avenue;
  • Road excavation starting at Clegg Street.

Traffic

The full road closure between Echo Drive and Greenfield Drive will be extended to June 24th. Additional time is required to complete the installation of the caisson and to complete the reinstatement of the southbound lane. The southbound lane in this section will re-open on June 25th and the northbound lane will remain closed for the summer.

The Main Street northbound lane (from Hawthorne Avenue to Harvey Street) will be closed starting on Monday June 22nd. The Main Street northbound lane (from Harvey Street to Greenfield Avenue) will be closed starting on Thursday June 25th

A reminder that Colonel By Drive is closed to vehicular traffic for Sunday Bikedays from 9am to 1pm until the Labour Day weekend. Starting this Sunday, OC Transpo buses will be detoured via McGillivray Street/Hazel Street/Echo Drive and Colonel By Drive during the Sunday Bikedays events. This bus detour is necessary to maintain bus services in the community.

Did you know?

On Sunday, June 21st, the Children’s Garden (Main and Clegg) will be hosting a family celebration of the Summer Solstice & National Aboriginal Day. The suggested donation is $1 per family.

Happy Father’s Day!
