Advent: Preparing for the Spirit of Christmas

Church of AscencionAdvent begins Sunday, Nov. 29. With the hustle and bustle of the season, rushing around to buy gifts and prepare for parties, we at Ascension try to slow down, reflect and prepare for Christmas.

There are a number of events and services at our church throughout December. We invite you to join us.

Third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. (starting in November) – Music & Word service is a time of music, readings and silence. A light dinner of soup, bread and conversation will be served following the contemplative hour.

Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. – Requiem for Fourteen Roses is a concert in memory of the women who were murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique.

Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. – Harmonic Generation is an a cappella choir that will be singing some covers as well as Christmas carols. The event is a fundraiser for sponsoring a Syrian refugee family. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students.

Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. – Ascension’s Christmas pageant, as interpreted by our children, tells the story of the first Christmas.

Dec. 24 at 7:30 p.m. – The Christmas Eve candlelight service; carol singing from 7-7:30 p.m..

Dec. 25 at 10 a.m. – an informal Christmas morning service.

Preparing ourselves for Christmas also includes slowing down and reflecting on our consumer habits. At a time when so many of us have as much as we need, we feel drawn to give to those who do not have enough. This year, we are asking our community at large to consider alternative gift-giving through donations in the name of loved ones. People can choose to help support one of three areas:

  • Community Fund, which provides food and necessities for those in need in Old Ottawa East;
  • the youth exposure program to Guatemala that is taking place in the spring; or
  • help get family members of our Burundian community to safety.

Those who make donations will receive a tax receipt. For more information on each of these areas and how to give, visit our website after mid-November (www.churchoftheascension.ca).

The Church of the Ascension is a parish of the Anglican Church of Canada. We are located at 253 Echo Drive, near the Pretoria Bridge. You can also find us online at www.churchoftheascension.ca and you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
